As an art teacher, I am often challenged by the popular myth, “I cannot draw and therefore, I’m not an artist.” While fundamentals of drawing are important to an artist’s training, it is limiting to believe that this is where art begins and ends. Creating art can have so many different avenues, with a wide variety of media and purpose. Whether students are inspired to build, paint, design, or capture an image, their art making should be an enjoyable experience where the process is just as significant as the end product. My goal as an art teacher is to provide each student with the best tools possible to grow in their own craft. Through art production and the study of art, students develop their visual literacy, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. They learn to look carefully at the world around them and they realize that there is not just one solution to every problem. Through carefully constructed art curriculum, I hope to cultivate a safe space for creativity where students have opportunities to take risks with their artwork and can explore aspects of their own life and identity. I believe that each student is an artist and each student’s story is unique and valuable to the makeup of the classroom.
